Recent protests on the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system didn't do very much to stop subway use by area commuters – even though last Monday's protest, convened by online hacktivist group Anonymous, managed to shut down four of the city's subway stations between roughly 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (PST) that day.
But the protests, which only led to a 3.3 percent drop in total system use, could be considered the solo in a chorus of criticism against BART officials. The reason? Cell phone service: Specifically,BART officials' decision to temporarily suspend stations' cellular connectivity on August 11 in an attempt to thwart the effective organization of protests planned for that day.
