For a public agency that has been the target of such controversy over the use of deadly force by its cops, BART continues to show a remarkable capacity to misfire — and shoot itself in the foot.
This was demonstrated on Aug. 11 with its decision to shut down cellular phone service at its San Francisco stations as a means of discouraging a potential public protest.
This was believed to be the first time that a public agency shut down an electronic communications system as a way to quell a political protest — at least here in America. As many will recall, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak tried something similar in January, cutting off the Internet and other communications in response to protests in Cairo. That didn't turn out so well either.
